Payment processing for large-ticket and high-value goods merchants in September 2026
Why furniture, jewelry, machinery and custom builds lose aggregators, how a few chargebacks become a ratio event, and when 6%–12% still beats a 10% rolling reserve on expensive goods.

AT A GLANCE — Large-Ticket & High-Value Goods Underwriting Profile
Industry ranges are compiled from public sources and vary by acquirer, jurisdiction and merchant profile. RiskPay figures are from the provider's published pricing.
01 — Structural Risk
Why this vertical gets declined
A $8,000 authorization is a fraud event until proven otherwise. A $8,000 chargeback is a ratio event on a young MID. Delayed custom manufacture makes the file look like unshipped goods.
Four vectors:
01. AOV vs fraud engines
Aggregator machine-learning is tuned for $40 Shopify carts. Large tickets trip manual review and reserves.
02. Deposits for custom work
50% deposits for builds that ship in 16 weeks are delayed-delivery risk.
03. Friendly fraud
Cardholders keep the sofa and dispute. Representment needs delivery signatures, not a screenshot.
04. Partial shipments
Charging in full then shipping in pieces creates “where is the rest” disputes.
02 — The Fallout
What actually happens when you get shut down
Large-ticket freezes trap deposits for goods still in the workshop. Materials invoices do not wait.
- 01
AOV or dispute review
A single large chargeback or a cluster of high auths opens the file.
- 02
Reserve increase then freeze
Platforms often raise rolling reserve on high AOV first.
- 03
Risk termination
Notice cites high risk, delayed delivery, or excessive disputes.
- 04
Hold of custom deposits
Unused manufacture is treated as unshipped goods. Length varies.
- 05
MATCH exposure
Excessive-chargeback filings follow the workshop entity.
What Traditional Recovery Looks Like
Merchants seeking emergency replacement accounts for large-ticket merchants through high-risk Independent Sales Organizations typically encounter non-refundable application fees, rolling reserves held for months, elevated discount rates, and delayed international wires. Those terms vary by acquirer and jurisdiction — confirm directly.
Table 1 — Large-ticket operational baseline
Requirements checklist
Match the MCC to the actual goods. Do not invent a code. Delivery evidence is the product.
| Requirement | Standard / Specification | Why Acquirers Demand It | Protocol on Non-Custodial Rails |
|---|---|---|---|
| Correct goods MCC | Published code for furniture, jewelry, machinery, etc. | Miscode looks like hiding | ISO / descriptor setup |
| Deposit terms | What the deposit buys and when the balance charges | Custom-build disputes | Contract + checkout |
| Delivery evidence | Signature, photos, serials | Friendly fraud on expensive goods | Essential for defense |
| Descriptor | Workshop brand on the invoice | Unrecognized large charges | Configurable in dashboard |
| Refund vs custom | Written policy once manufacture starts | Change-of-mind after cut wood or set stone | Merchant discretion |
Table 2 — Effective processing cost per $10,000 processed
What it costs
Stated assumption: Based on $10,000 monthly volume. Figures include the plan subscription fee (annual plans allocated monthly as one-twelfth of the annual cost) and exclude the provider fee (typically 1.5%–4.5%), which is billed separately.
| Plan / Billing | Gateway % | Gateway $ | Allocated Subscription | Total on $10k |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free ($0/mo) | 12% | $1,200 | $0 | $1,200 |
| Scale monthly ($99/mo) | 10% | $1,000 | $99 | $1,099 |
| Scale yearly ($1,188/yr) | 7% | $700 | $99 | $799 |
| MAX monthly ($199/mo) | 8% | $800 | $199 | $999 |
| MAX yearly ($1,899/yr) | 6% | $600 | $158 | $758 |
Footnote: Scale yearly calculates as $10,000 × 7% + ($1,188 ÷ 12) = $799. MAX yearly calculates as $10,000 × 6% + ($1,899 ÷ 12) = $758.25 (rounded to $758). For a detailed cost model including volume break-evens, visit our pricing breakdown.
03 — Practical Architecture
Recommended setup
Take deposits on a rail that cannot freeze every in-progress build because one cardholder disputed a dining table.
Self-hosted WordPress + WooCommerce
Own invoices and production milestones. Do not keep the only order book inside a platform that can pause payouts.
RiskPay WooCommerce plugin
Install the official RiskPay extension. Customers pay with cards, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. No forced crypto checkout. The provider does not use API keys.
Self-custody Polygon wallet
YOUR WALLET ADDRESS — materials cash should not sit in a high-AOV rolling reserve.
Institutional exchange off-ramp
Hold operating reserves in USDC where useful. Off-ramp to corporate fiat for payroll, ads platforms that require it, and taxes.
Ready to stabilize your checkout?
Collect large-ticket cards without parking custom deposits in a freezeable platform balance.
04 — Margin Threshold
Where this is not the right fit
If gross margin after materials and labor is under a 25% gross margin threshold, 6%–12% of the retail price will erase the job — especially if you are processing the full ticket rather than a deposit.
High-margin custom work can treat the fee as cheaper than a typical industry-range 10% reserve held for months on every order. Terms on traditional MIDs still vary by acquirer.
05 — Storefront Optimization
Integration notes for large-ticket merchants
Milestone invoices beat one giant capture at order time when manufacture is long.
Deposit then balance
Same descriptor family. The balance charge should not look like a new merchant.
Hosted invoices
Phone-sold machinery and jewelry often close on a payment link, not a public cart.
Serials on receipts
Put identifying marks on the receipt you will later use in representment.
06 — Questions
Frequently asked questions
Why did PayPal limit me after two furniture orders?
High AOV plus delayed delivery. A few disputes look like a collapsing ratio.
Should I use 5722 for appliances?
Use the published MCC that matches the goods. Do not invent a number if you are not sure — describe the category instead.
Does instant USDC mean I can skip delivery signatures?
No. Friendly fraud still exists. Signatures are how you win representment from your own treasury.
Is a 25% margin enough on a $12,000 table?
If margin is only 25% before a 6%–12% gateway, the rail is too expensive. Same threshold as on our pricing page.
Do you claim to have tested jewelry MIDs?
No. This page does not claim independent tests.
